Tips for creating your Homepage Site on our Service
- You must first request your Homepage site to be established. We do not establish a site when you sign-up unless requested. We need to know what software you will be using and how you will be publishing to your site.
- Your startup page should be named INDEX.HTM or INDEX.HTML. Our service will look for these pages when users enter your Homepage directory and start these pages automatically. If you use some other page name for your startup page then the user will be given a list of files in your directory.
- Users do not like to scroll unless necessary. Your startup page should be a single page length with links to other pages that may scroll.
- Most users will view your site with a 14" monitor. If your are using a 15" or 17" monitor test your site with a 14". You might be surprised at how nice it looks on your big monitor but how disappointing it will look on a 14".
- Most users are viewing your site using a modem connection to the Internet. Any page that takes more than 45 seconds to load will become boring to many users and they will bump out of your site before they have seen what you have to offer. Use graphics sparingly and make them as small as possible so they will load fast. What might look cool to you might not be cool to the majority of Internet users.
- Anything that would be illegal to display in your community would be illegal to display on the Internet. Don't be fooled by the push to keep the Internet free from controls. You will still be held responsible by local authorities if you post illegal material on your site and you may find the Police at your door. If you are in doubt, ask your attorney to view your site.
- Do not post any nude photos of any person under the age of 18 and in some areas 21 is the golden age.
- Do not post any statement or comment to encourage another person to commit a crime. You may be charged as a co-conspirator.
- Do not post any statement that is untrue or that you can not back up in court because you may find that you will be forced to.
- Do not post any material that is not your own without written permission from the creator or owner.
Websites can be fun, but remember, when you post a site on the Internet, you become an Editor and Publisher just like a magazine or newspaper and your site can be held to the same legal standards. Be smart and avoid problems.
