Descendants of John Hill

Amelia County Virginia

DNA evidence (see the Hill Surname DNA Project, group 12) ties my Hill family line to the William Hill - Susannah Smither line. I believe that I descend from the line of John Hill, William Hill's brother. My haplogroup has recently been refined to R1b1c10, which has been associated with the Celtic culture of Europe.

John Hill's children:

William d. before 1777. I believe that my direct ancestor, Abner Hill b. abt. 1768 d. after 1850 Grant Co. KY was possibly son of William. I'm currently trying to determine if Leonard Hill d. 1828 Clark Co. KY was also a son of William.
John d. 1808 Clark County, KY. I believe that John first moved to Madison Co. Kentucky, buying land from Samuel Davis in 1787. I believe this Samuel Davis is the father of Jefferson Davis, later to be president of the confederacy.
Joel b. 1734? d. 1834 Madison Co. KY. m. Priscilla. I have a Daughters of the American Revolution application by a descendant of Joel that claims that Joel served in the Revolutionary War at Miller's Station, KY.
Isaac d. before 1785. Isaac's children, Isaac Jr., Richard, and Sarah, were appointed Abner Parrott as guardian. I believe Isaac and Richard moved with Abner Parrott to Rockingham Co. NC. .....................
Moses Moses died sometime after 1790. He was "Next Friend" to Abner Hill and John Humphrey Hill in a 1786 court case. He sold land to Josiah Seay in 1790 and also served on a jury in the case of Samuel Davis v. Sterling Thornton in 1790.
Priscilla (Drusilla?) Priscilla married John Bell in 1769. John made his will in 1811, Amelia County, naming his wife Drusilla. They had a son, George Bell. I don't know a lot about Priscilla, but will try to gather more information as time permits.

Isaac Hill of King William and Caroline Counties Virginia, and possible Madison family connections. This page shows possible connections between Isaac Hill and my Amelia County Hill line. Some sources have stated that this Isaac Hill married Margaret Jennings, the daughter of Edmund Jennings.

Hill family tree showing a combination of the Jamestown Hill Family line found online and my online research on Thomas Hill m. Ann Russell, and their son, William Hill m. Frances Needles:
Please note that most of this information was found online, and thus not verified.

Amelia County Deeds involving the Hill family.

Hill family of Rockbridge County, VA - Some Hills from this family possibly traveled to areas of Kentucky where my Hill family lived.

There seem to be a lot of links to the families of Watkins, Clay, Bennett, Cheatham, and others that I'm researching.
The 1748 will of John Watkins of Essex Co. VA mentions his daughter Barbary Hill, and grandchildren John Hill, Leonard Hill, and Jesey Hill. My direct Hill line moved to Madison and Clark Counties Kentucky, and Madison County tax lists in the early 1800s show a Barbary Hill, John Hill, Leonard Hill, and Jesse Hill. Are these the same people listed in the John Watkins will? Also, there seems to be a Hill family connection with the Watkins family and the Clay family. John Clay married Sarah Watkins and died 1762 in Chesterfield Co. VA. (http://members.tripod.com/~labach/jclayanc.htm#i1476) Joel Hill, son of John Hill Sr., bought land from Green Clay in Madison County Kentucky 1788.

Thomas Atkinson's Amelia County Day/Account Book shows a transaction between Isaac Hill and Walter Bennett in 1777. I know that Nicholas Hill of Isle of Wight County Virginia married Silvestra Bennett, and Grace Bennett married Green Hill. Could there be a connection?

John Hill of Chesterfield County married Ann Cheatham in 1750. There was a James Cheatham who made his will (1796) in Clark County, Kentucky, with William Hill listed as a witness. Clark County is where John Hill Jr. and Leonard Hill lived at the time. Also, one of Ann Cheatham's brothers, William Cheatham, had a son named Major Cheatham. There is a Major Cheatham shown next to John P. Hill of Todd Co. Kentucky in the 1820 census. Todd and neighboring Christian County Kentucky is where some descendants of John Hill Sr. of Amelia County and his son John Hill Jr. moved.

One of my current interests is discovering whether my Hill line is related to the Humphrey Hill family of Virginia. There is some circumstantial evidence linking my Hill line to the Humphrey Hill line, namely that my Hill family lived relatively near Humphrey Hill in Virginia, and I believe that my gggg grandfather, Abner Hill, had a brother named John Humphrey Hill. Abner Hill and John Humphrey Hill appear together on October 26, 1786, Amelia County Court Order Book.
Also, a Humphrey Hill Sr. and Jr. lived in Madison Co. Kentucky during the early to mid 1800s, the same time period as my Hill line was in Madison County.

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN HILL died Abt. 1780 in Amelia County Virginia. He married Elizabeth (possibly Wingo).

Notes: John HILL also had sons Joel, John, Moses, and Isaac. Joel HILL was shown to have moved from Amelia County, Virginia to Madison County, Kentucky as early as 1787, as evidenced by tax records. John HILL Jr. also moved to Kentucky, and there is a John Hill listed in both Madison County and Clark County Kentucky.

Child of John HILL and Elizabeth is:
2. i. William HILL, d. Bef. 1777, Amelia County Virginia.

Generation No. 2

2. William HILL died Bef. 1777 in Amelia County Virginia.

Notes: John HILL's will listed William HILL as being deceased before 1777. My conjecture is that Abner HILL was William HILL's son, and, being under 18, would have been an orphan after William's death. Abner and John Humphrey Hill both appear in Amelia County Virginia court as plaintiffs represented by their "next friend" Moses Hill in 1786. I believe that Abner went to Kentucky with one of his uncles, either Joel or John. Madison County Kentucky tax records start showing Abner HILL beginning in 1802, living in the same area as Joel HILL.

Child of William HILL is:
3. i. Abner HILL, b. 1768, Virginia; d. Aft. 1850, Grant County Kentucky.

Generation No. 3

3. Abner HILL was born 1768 in Virginia, and died Aft. 1850 in Grant County Kentucky. He married Elizabeth FULLILOVE 1802 in Madison County Kentucky.

Notes: Abner HILL is shown on the Madison County census and tax lists until 1828, when he moved to Boone County Kentucky. Boone County is where some of his wife Elizabeth's Fullilove family had moved.

Child of Abner HILL and Elizabeth FULLILOVE is:
4. i. William HILL, b. Abt. 1810, Madison County Kentucky; d. October 19, 1865, Boone County Kentucky.

Generation No. 4

4. William HILL was born Abt. 1810 in Madison County Kentucky, and died October 19, 1865 in Boone County Kentucky. He married Mary POTTER.

Child of William HILL and Mary POTTER is:
5. i. John W.5 HILL, b. December 1831, Boone County Kentucky; d. May 09, 1909, Effingham County Illinois.

Generation No. 5

5. John W. HILL was born December 1831 in Boone County Kentucky, and died May 09, 1909 in Effingham County Illinois. He married Nancy STONE.

Child of John HILL and Nancy STONE is:
6. i. John W. HILL, b. July 04, 1856, Grant County Kentucky; d. 1929, Washington County Arkansas.

Generation No. 6

6. John W. HILL was born July 04, 1856 in Grant County Kentucky, and died 1929 in Washington County Arkansas.

Child of John W. HILL is:
i. Raymond HILL, b. April 14, 1899, Effingham County Illinois; d. September 29, 1960, Fayetteville, Washington County Arkansas; m. Eunice CHANDLER.
